The Founders

Built with Purpose.

Cement Creek Vet is a small-animal practice built from scratch by Dr. Kara Erickson and Shawna Castillo, business partners and besties with over 35 combined years of experience in veterinary medicine.

We each spent the last few decades working in the industry and taking notes - on what worked, what didn't, and what a really good vet visit could actually feel like for both you and your pet.

Our Mission
To leave every patient, client, and interaction better than we found them.
  • Honest medicine
  • Empathy
  • Real conversations

How we practice

Everything is intentional.

Decades of notes on what worked, what didn't, and what a really good vet visit could actually feel like - built into how we practice every day.

Approach

Context, not just conclusions.

When we recommend something, we tell you why – how it works, what the evidence says, what happens if you skip it. You’ll never leave with an estimate you don’t understand or a diagnosis without knowing what it means for your animal. Our collaborative approach to treatment plans means you won’t feel bad for asking questions or cornered by the cost. We work with CareCredit, Klarna, Cherry payment plans, and even created our application-based Angel Fund, Heart Dog & Cat Fund, so that you always have options.

Frequently asked

Got questions? We have answers.

What can I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit starts before you walk in. Once your appointment is scheduled, we'll send you a registration form to complete digitally - it covers the important details about your pet so we can hit the ground running when you arrive. A few days before your appointment, we'll also send relevant information by text: what to expect, the science behind any vaccines or tests your pet might be due for, anything worth knowing ahead of time. You show up informed, not handed a pamphlet in the lobby.

When you walk in, we know your name. The exam itself isn't a 15-minute checklist - you'll meet your veterinarian, talk through what we're seeing, what's coming, and what your pet might need over the next year. If we recommend anything beyond the wellness check, we'll tell you what and why.

Can I stay with my dog or cat the whole time?

Yes, mostly. For routine appointments we start and finish with you in the room. Occasionally we need to bring your pet to our treatment area for tests or treatments but will discuss this with you at the time. Anesthesia, surgery, dental procedures, and some treatments require a controlled environment, so we'll take your pet to our treatment area for those. Nothing about your pet's care will be hidden from you - we'll always tell you what's happening and why.

What if my dog or cat is anxious at the vet?

Anxious pets are a big part of why we built this place the way we did. We offer Happy Visits - no exam, no treatment, just a chance for your dog or cat to come in, see the space, meet the team, get a treat, and head home before anything stressful happens. Our cat area is a separate, quiet space away from dogs (because cats have opinions about that). Exams happen on the floor, outside, in the parking lot - wherever your pet is most comfortable.

If you know your pet is nervous at the vet, tell us when you book. We'll plan for it: longer appointment, quieter room, slower pace, medication considerations, and of course, lots of treats.

What if I can't afford the recommended treatment?

You're not the first to ask, and you won't be the last - no judgment here. We'll always walk you through options: the most comprehensive plan, something that fits your budget, or a step-by-step approach over time. We'll tell you honestly what we'd choose for our own pets, but the decision is always yours.

We accept CareCredit, Klarna, Cherry payment plans, and all major credit cards. We'll always review a full estimate with you before we do anything.

We also established the Heart Dog & Cat Fund for pets whose families need a little extra support. The Fund is a registered 501(c)3, so your donations are tax deductible. Learn more or contribute →

Or just ask us about it at your next visit.

Why is veterinary care so expensive?

It's a fair question and one we'd rather answer honestly than dodge. Over the past decade, corporate consolidation has changed the veterinary industry significantly - large corporations have acquired clinics across the country and benefit from subsidized pricing on everything from medications to equipment that independent practices simply don't have access to.

Cement Creek Veterinary Hospital is independently owned. That means we pay market rate for everything, and our pricing reflects the actual cost of providing high quality care. We keep our prices fair, we'll always be transparent about them, and we're not here to nickel and dime you. We're here because we love this community and the animals in it – and we need to keep the lights on to keep doing that.

How do I switch to Cement Creek from my current vet?

Easier than you'd think. Just schedule an initial wellness exam and let us know who your current vet is - we'll request your pet's medical records directly so our team can review their history before you arrive. That way we can spend your appointment actually getting to know you and your pet, not playing catch-up on paperwork.
